Protected by high defensive walls, a moat and gatehouse with drawbridge and portcullis, the palace has been home to the Bishop of Bath and Wells for 800 Years. Vicars' Close, adjacent to the cathedral is the oldest continuously inhabited medieval street in Europe. It was started in 1348 to provide 42 bachelor dwellings for the "Vicars' Choral" - the men of the choir. Being a public area, visitors are free to walk this medieval street.
